A Highland Driver's Guide

Living in the Highlands certainly has its perks. Beautiful scenery, open roads and some of the most spectacular driving routes in the country. But when your nearest big town could be an hour away, having a car you can rely on to get you from A to B is pretty important.

And if you've been thinking about making the switch to electric, chances are you've asked yourself one question: how far can I actually go on a single charge?

Well, the all-new Nissan LEAF might just surprise you.

With a driving range of up to 387 miles, the latest generation of Nissan's pioneering electric car is designed to make everything from the daily commute to longer Highland adventures feel more achievable.

But what does that range actually mean when you're driving around the Highlands? Let's find out.

First Things First: What Range Do New Nissan LEAF Models Provide?

The all-new Nissan LEAF is available with two battery options, giving you the flexibility to choose the one that best suits your lifestyle and driving habits.

Nissan LEAF 52kWh – Up to 280 Miles

The 52kWh battery offers an official driving range of up to 280 miles (WLTP), making it a great option for everyday journeys, commuting and local adventures.

If your typical week involves travelling to work, doing the school run, popping to the shops and exploring the Highlands at weekends, you might find that the standard battery offers more than enough range for your needs.

Nissan LEAF 75kWh – Up to 387 Miles

Need a little more freedom to roam? The larger 75kWh battery offers an impressive official driving range of up to 387 miles (WLTP).

Whether you're regularly travelling longer distances for work, visiting family further afield or simply prefer the convenience of charging less frequently, the extended-range LEAF offers that extra flexibility.

Of course, these are official WLTP figures. Your actual range will depend on factors such as weather conditions, driving style, speed and the weight you're carrying.

From Inverness to... Where Could the New Nissan LEAF Take You?

Let's put those numbers into perspective… We've picked a few familiar journeys from Inverness to show just how far you could travel in the all-new Nissan LEAF.

Inverness to Aviemore – Approximately 30 Miles

Fancy a day out in the Cairngorms? Whether you're heading south for a walk, something tasty to eat, or a day on the slopes in winter, Aviemore is only around 30 miles from Inverness. That means a return journey of approximately 60 miles – well within the official range of either Nissan LEAF battery option.

And with plenty of range to spare, you can spend less time worrying about charging and more time enjoying everything the Cairngorms have to offer.

Inverness to Fort William – Approximately 65 Miles

There's nothing quite like a drive along Loch Ness towards Fort William, especially when the scenery is looking its best. At approximately 65 miles each way, a return journey from Inverness to Fort William covers around 130 miles.

That's comfortably within the official WLTP range of both LEAF battery options, although real-world conditions will determine how much charge you use.

So you might be visiting family, heading out for a hike or simply enjoying a scenic drive, whatever takes you there - the new LEAF has the potential to make the journey without needing to recharge along the way.

Inverness to Aberdeen – Approximately 105 Miles

Regularly travelling east for work or uni? Maybe you just want to head out for a day of shopping or to meet up with friends or family… The journey from Inverness to Aberdeen is approximately 105 miles, making it around 210 miles for a return trip.

Both versions of the Nissan LEAF have an official range exceeding that distance, although the 75kWh battery provides considerably more flexibility. For drivers regularly covering longer distances, having that additional range could make a real difference, particularly during the colder months.

Inverness to Edinburgh – Approximately 157 Miles

What about a trip a little further afield?

At approximately 157 miles each way, Edinburgh is a popular destination for Highland drivers – be it travelling for business, a weekend away or a family visit.

With an official range of up to 387 miles, the 75kWh Nissan LEAF has the potential to cover the approximately 314-mile return journey on a single charge under favourable conditions. However, motorway speeds, cold weather and other real-world factors can reduce your range, so planning a charging stop is sensible, particularly on longer journeys.

And with rapid charging available along the way in places like Dunblane and Perth, taking a break along the way can be a convenient opportunity to top up your battery before continuing your journey.

What About Driving an Electric Car in a Highland Winter?

Let's face it, Highland weather can be unpredictable at the best of times. One minute you're enjoying glorious sunshine, the next you're facing freezing temperatures, heavy rain or even snow.

So, it's understandable that drivers might wonder how an electric car performs when temperatures drop.

Like all electric vehicles, the Nissan LEAF's driving range can be affected by colder weather. Low temperatures can reduce battery efficiency, while using features such as heating, heated seats and windscreen demisters also consumes energy.

But the all-new Nissan LEAF has some clever technology designed to help.

For example, a heat pump cabin heater is available, helping to warm the interior more efficiently than conventional electric resistance heating.

The LEAF also offers battery thermal management and battery preconditioning technology, helping the battery operate at a suitable temperature and supporting more consistent rapid charging performance.

And with NissanConnect Services, you can remotely precondition the cabin before setting off. When the vehicle is plugged in, this can help reduce the amount of battery energy needed to warm the interior once you're on the road.

Of course, it's still worth allowing extra range for winter journeys, particularly if you're travelling through remote parts of the Highlands.

How Long Does It Take to Charge the New Nissan LEAF?

One of the biggest misconceptions about electric cars is that charging always takes hours. While charging at home is ideal for topping up overnight, the all-new Nissan LEAF also supports DC rapid charging, making longer journeys more convenient.

The 52kWh model supports DC charging at up to 105kW, while the 75kWh version can charge at up to 150kW. Under suitable conditions, Nissan quotes a charging time of approximately 35 minutes to take the battery from 10% to 80% using a compatible rapid charger.

So, whether you're stopping for a coffee, grabbing some lunch or stretching your legs on a longer journey, you could give your LEAF a useful boost of range while you take a break.

For everyday driving, many electric car owners prefer the convenience of charging at home, plugging in overnight and waking up with a battery ready for the day ahead.

Making Longer Journeys Easier with Google Built-In

One of the standout features of the all-new Nissan LEAF is its available Google built-in technology. With Google Maps integrated directly into the vehicle's infotainment system on selected grades, planning longer journeys becomes that little bit easier.

The navigation system can help you find charging stations along your route, taking your battery level and charging requirements into account. This is particularly useful when you're exploring somewhere unfamiliar or heading further afield.

Rather than having to work out where to stop and charge yourself, the LEAF can help you plan ahead, giving you more confidence to enjoy the journey.
