From everyday icon to all-electric innovation

Few cars have earned the same loyal following as the Nissan Micra. Compact, reliable, and unmistakably stylish, it’s been a familiar sight on roads across the country for more than four decades. From the residential streets of Inverness to the winding roads of the Highlands, the Micra has been the perfect companion for drivers who value efficiency, comfort and dependability.

As the All-New Nissan MICRA prepares to make its debut, it’s the perfect time to look back at how this small car became a global icon… and how it’s now stepping boldly into an electric future.

The Beginning: First Generation (K10; 1982)

The story begins in 1982, when Nissan launched the first Micra, known as the K10. Designed to replace the Nissan Cherry, it was compact, affordable, and built for city life. With its 1.0-litre petrol engine, simple boxy design, and famously low running costs, it quickly became a hit with new drivers and families alike.

In the UK, the Micra’s reputation for reliability soon grew. It became the go-to choice for those who needed something practical and easy to drive, whether navigating city streets or squeezing into the tightest parking spaces.

The Curves Arrive: Second Generation (K11; 1992)

By the early 1990s, the Micra had already cemented its reputation as a trustworthy runabout. But with the K11, launched in 1992, Nissan took things up a gear. Gone were the boxy lines of the 80s- replaced by a smooth, rounded design that made the Micra feel more modern and aerodynamic.

This generation also introduced safety features like airbags, a first for the Micra, along with improved engines and more trim options. It became a common sight in Inverness and beyond, beloved by learners and seasoned drivers alike for its no-nonsense practicality.

Going Modern: Third Generation (K12; 2002)

By the time the K12 Micra arrived in 2002, drivers expected more technology and comfort and Nissan of course delivered. The K12 introduced keyless ignition, an updated infotainment system, and a curvier, more contemporary design in an attempt to appeal to younger drivers.

It was fun to drive, easy to park, and offered excellent visibility; qualities that made it ideal for life in the Highlands, whether navigating the business of everyday life or cruising through coastal villages as a first-time driver.

Going Global: Fourth Generation (K13; 2010)

In 2010, the K13 took the Micra global. Built to appeal to drivers in more than 160 countries, this generation focused on efficiency and practicality. The engines were cleaner, the interiors were roomier, and the driving experience was smoother than ever.

For Highland drivers covering mixed terrain the K13 struck the perfect balance between economy and usability.

A Bolder Identity: Fifth Generation (K14; 2016)

Then came the K14, launched in 2016, and it marked a turning point. The Micra was no longer just a practical small car—it was bold, sporty, and stylish. With its sharp lines, floating roof, and vibrant colours, it turned heads while keeping its trademark ease of use.

The K14 also introduced a major leap forward in safety and connectivity, with lane departure warnings, autonomous emergency braking, and smartphone integration. For many Highland drivers, it became the perfect mix of fun and functionality.
